COACHING

Coaching is about two people moving in the Woods together – you are looking at reaching your goal-post in these Woods, and me as your coach is helping you. I have been in these Woods before but not this part of the Woods. So we move together, sometimes I am behind you and pushing you, and sometimes I will be ahead of you and pulling you, leading you towards your goal.

In this highly competitive world, people face several challenges in their lives – be it career, office, business, or in your personal lives. They face issues of not getting the recognition that they deserve, the expectations are high – from management, family and socially amongst friends, relatives and colleagues, and they are constantly under stress trying to prove to themselves and others. For some people, there are issues related to health and wellness that pull them back, for instance, dealing with high anxiety, managing anger, losing weight, etc.

It may be observed that most of these issues are psychological in nature, which means that they have roots that are linked to some past experiences and beliefs, deep down at the sub-conscious level. These beliefs are firmly entrenched over time, and block their progress. Each time they want to perform on a larger stage, there is a voice in them that says, “You can’t because you failed in the past”, or “You have never done anything like this before”. Infact, even the goals that they set for themselves, are generally the ones that are in their comfort levels. This is also the reason for resistance to any Change, and most people continue to dwell in their comfort zones. The same is true even for health issues as most of them have a past belief linked to it. When one is not able to realise one’s goals, there is the obvious frustration and anxiety which lead to anger, depression, and even ailments. There is a need for the person to speak out and discuss their issues with someone whom they trust, someone who will listen to them, and someone who can look at their issues from an independent perspective without judging them.

People need people to talk to, and this is where Coaching becomes an important aspect in which people can use effectively.

You want to perform at your optimum best, or you have goals that you have to meet and do even better – for instance, sales-executives want to surpass their targets, performers need to rise above the bar to deliver against competition, corporate executives are constantly looking for career-progression, some others are looking for a job-change or career-change, while some need support in handling change in their new roles or environment. There are even those who may be looking for help in personal relationships and health.

You are putting in a lot of effort, but you know that something is missing and you need to do more. A common mistake that people make is that, they believe it is enough to learn new skills that are required, and the rest will follow. However, this is so incorrect and that is the reason that most goals fail. There is infact a need, to make a change in your beliefs, behaviour and habits if you need to achieve your goals. There is a need to look internally within you and ask yourself some important and tough questions such as, what is really stopping you from making the progress, what are you avoiding, etc.? You get into these ‘stuck states’ and this is really not helping you in anyway. You want someone whom you can rely on, who can guide you to overcome these obstacles. So what can you do? Whom would you ask?

Once in a while, everyone needs a sounding board, someone who will listen and provide valuable feedback and helps to clarify issues and concerns. This is where a Coach would help you.

Success Coaching brings about a fresh perspective on personal and professional challenges, identifies and removes those mental-blocks in your life that are holding you back, taps into your full potential so that you are able to make better decisions for yourself and the business, pushes you to achieve goals on time, and improve productivity.

Many people confuse Coaching with Mentoring, Counselling, Therapy, and Consulting. However, Coaching is quite different.

Mentoring is done by a person who has traversed the path that you are currently moving on, and advises you through experience on the best course of action to be taken. He is an expert in the area you are treading, and is equipped to guide you.

Consultants study and analyse the needs of an organisation or a group and offer their solutions based on their specialised expertise to ‘fix’ the problem. They are experts in their area of work.

Counselling involves advising and guiding people through their problems. There are marriage counsellors, relationship counsellors, career counsellors, etc.

Therapy looks at the past experiences that might be the root cause in the way the client thinks or behaves, that influences their habits. Usually, issues related to depression, drug or alcohol addiction, post-traumatic disorders, etc. require therapy.

Coaching looks at the present and the future, i.e. what does the client want, and how they can plan to get what they want. It uses various tools and techniques to help clients to generate their own solutions and then hold them accountable for it. Through an interactive dialog, the coach uses various techniques to shows them a reflection of what’s going wrong in your life, helps them work out their own solutions, and holds them accountable for it. The interaction involves asking powerful questions that pushes the client to think. The coach is an independent entity, and generally works best when he/she is not from the same profession.

Our process uses a combination of Coaching and a bit of Therapy.

  • Coaching has proven to be extremely beneficial when the Client is willing to grow and when there is an obvious gap between where the Client is, and where he or she wants to be.

There are huge benefits observed, few of them are mentioned below:

Establish clear goals and maintain Focus, Build accountability for action and commitment, Enable change, Gain perspective, Build Personal awareness and development, and Gain better traction towards goal achievement.

  • People have availed the services of a Life / Success Coach for achieving peak performance, career transitions (from one role to another, handling additional responsibilities, moving to a different line of work), managing anger, dealing with alcohol, smoking, repairing broken relationships, improving relationships, accelerating health recovery (e.g. weight reduction, allergies, pains, etc.), and many more.
  • Coaching is already quite popular in the western countries, and while it’s relatively new in India. Nearly 85-90% of the CEOs have coaches, CIOs, Executives, Managers, Business Owners, Celebrities, Top Sportsmen, and Individuals are increasingly hiring life coaches to help them reach their goals. The best golfer in the world – Tiger Woods, had a Coach, Bill Gates had a coach, and so did ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt, Michael Jordan – the best basketball player of all time, Barack Obama, Lance Armstrong, Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffet, and Richard Branson. Many of the top entertainers, Bollywood / Hollywood celebrities – Arnold Schwarzenegger and Hritikh Roshan, have hired Coaches.

The process that is used here is in line with the guideline prescribed by the ICF (International Coaching Federation).

Coaching Session Pattern:

It involves multiple Coaching sessions, and the number of sessions will depend on the Goal that is set and the target it needs to be achieved within. This will be mutually decided prior to the commencement of the first session.

Each session with be around 60 to 90 minutes.

Pre-Session (or the Self-Discovery Session):

  • Prior to commencement of the Coaching programme, a Client Consent Form will be signed as a mutual agreement of confidentiality and other terms.
  • A Self-Discovery Questionnaire will be sent to you, and you need to fill this very thoughtfully. You may require 2 to 3 days for this as the questions are thought-provoking. This will help you and me to understand your thoughts, what you want to achieve, and your beliefs and way of thinking.
  • Incase of coaching related to career-alignment and career transition, we recommend that you get your In-born Aptitude Test done (Biometric Test – also called the DMIT test), which has proved very useful for people to determine what are the strengths that they are naturally born with, and this helps in understanding which career might be most suitable.

 The First Session:

  • We mutually arrive at prioritization of the goals and targets that you would like to achieve.
  • Understand your thought process, and expectations.
  • Arrive at agreed action points that you will be able to implement before the next meeting.

Second Session onwards:

  • Discuss on the previous action points.
  • Discuss on what went right and what needs to be improved.
  • Focus and discussion on a particular Key Area of concern – a belief or a behavioural change that needs to be worked on.
  • Finally, your coach will keep you focussed, motivated, and accountable as you implement your goal-plan. As you know, change isn’t easy, and setbacks can occur. Limiting beliefs may surface. Through our work together, we will help you overcome the challenges that may arise, enabling you to continue steadily forward towards your goal.

Yes, coaching can be done for a Group provided they have a common objective.
For Group Coaching, we usually recommend this to be done in smaller numbers, i.e. up to 6 to 8 people or even smaller, for maximum results.
